The Hart is a five-floor gastro pub and private dining venue at 56 Blandford Street, Marylebone, operated by the Public House Group. Situated in one of London’s most well-regarded neighbourhoods, the surrounding independent restaurants and boutiques have transformed the area into a well-known destination.
Public House Group are known for their commitment to high-quality interiors and hospitality spaces. Akehurst Group has previously delivered a full M&E package for The Hero of Maida in Maida Vale, and The Hart was a similar project with the addition of a design phase. A full mechanical and electrical design and installation across a multi-floor hospitality venue, from the basement to the private speakeasy bar on the third floor.
Unlike a standard installation project, Akehurst Group were tasked with the complete M&E design as well as the installation across all five floors.
Our commercial electricians began with the design phase, working up the electrical system for the full building before installation began. As with The Hero of Maida, the installation was built around a Rako scene-setting control system, which allows staff to programme and switch between lighting scenes throughout the venue. Five amp points were installed across the building for mood and ambient lighting, giving each floor its own distinct atmosphere, from the ground-floor pub to the intimate bar on the third floor.
The commercial kitchen on the first floor received a full electrical installation to support the kitchen equipment, including gas interlocks – a safety system that cuts the gas supply if the ventilation fails, and connections for the Rational commercial ovens installed as part of the kitchen fit-out.
With five floors and a mix of public-facing spaces, staff areas, and a commercial kitchen, the mechanical works required careful planning across the full building. Gas fireplaces were installed throughout, along with two large gas lanterns outside the main entrance, a distinctive feature that Public House Group use across their venues.
A boiler and immersion tank were installed to serve the building’s hot water and heating requirements. Gas pipework was installed to serve the commercial kitchen on the first floor, including connections for the gas appliances and Rational ovens. Plumbing installations covered the public toilet facilities in the basement and first floor.
On the ventilation and air conditioning side, ducted AC units were installed on the ground floor and the upper floors, with a stainless steel wall-mounted unit in the first floor commercial kitchen. A Daikin VAM unit was installed in the basement, a mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) system that draws fresh air into the building and extracts stale air, maintaining air circulation in the basement toilet facilities.
The Hart opened with a fully commissioned M&E installation across all five floors, designed and delivered by Akehurst Group from the ground up.
